There is a point every summer when I stop wanting more noise.
I still want to read, but I want books that lower the temperature a little. Not boring books. Just books with enough stillness in them to make the room feel calmer.
That is when I start leaning toward novels that move carefully, memoirs with a little space in the prose, and stories that trust atmosphere over volume.
I do not need every book to become a grand seasonal event. Sometimes I want something that feels like a shaded porch, a slow fan, and the part of the evening where nobody is trying to impress anyone.
Those are the books I end up remembering longest anyway. They do not force their way in. They just stay.
When July gets too loud, that kind of quiet starts feeling less like a preference and more like a rescue.
